President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor for Corruption, Martin Amidu.
Nominated by Attorney General Gloria Akuffo and approved by Parliament, he took oath of office on 23 February 2018.
This new appointment will lead the independent, non-partisan Special Prosecutor Office’s responsibilities to investigate and prosecute all corruption related cases, overcoming any existing institutional bottlenecks to the process.
Amidu, who helped to incorporate accountability and good governance into Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, believes it to be under real threat while corruption is allowed to continue.
The former Attorney General is now in a position to take the lead in Ghana’s fight against corruption and hold public officials, past and present, accountable for any mismanagement of public finances.
Such developments are welcomed by ARAP, where new opportunities can be created to strengthen the country’s anti-corruption efforts to further the interest of its citizens.
